Washington D.C. witnessed a thrilling spectacle this weekend as the IndyCar series held its inaugural race in the nation’s capital, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix featured 25 cars racing at speeds nearing 180 mph around a specially constructed track near the National Mall.

Race Highlights and Results

American driver Kyle Kirkwood clinched victory in the race, with Denmark’s Christian Lundgaard finishing in second place. Kirkwood’s teammates, Will Power and Marcus Ericsson, secured third and fourth positions, respectively. The event attracted thousands of fans, marking the first major auto race in D.C. in over 24 years.

Presidential Involvement

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the event by completing a ceremonial lap around the track, signaling the race’s official start by waving a green flag. The race had been in planning for over a year and included a course that ran along Pennsylvania Avenue, adjacent to the White House.

Event Preparations and Impact

In the weeks leading up to the race, the area surrounding the track underwent significant transformation, with grandstands and barriers erected, resulting in traffic disruptions and limited access to several popular tourist destinations. Notably, three Smithsonian museums restricted access to ticket holders for the duration of the event.

Track Layout and Race Format

The 1.7-mile track featured six left-hand turns and one right turn, with the race comprising 250 miles, equivalent to 147 laps. The starting grid was located near the U.S. Capitol, with the course taking drivers past iconic landmarks such as the National Archives and the Smithsonian museums.

Broadcast and Viewing Options

Fans could watch the race on Fox Sports, which provided coverage across various platforms, including FS1 and FS2. A 90-minute pre-show preceded the Grand Prix on the Fox broadcast network, with streaming available through the Fox One app.

Logistical Challenges and Costs

The total cost of the race remains undisclosed, but it is reported that Penske Entertainment, the parent company of IndyCar, covered the majority of expenses. The only costs to the government were related to security provided by the Secret Service and local law enforcement. Organizers have stated that any profits from the race will benefit charities selected by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Future of IndyCar in D.C.

While the Freedom 250 Grand Prix was a one-time event celebrating the nation’s milestone, both Mayor Bowser and President Trump have expressed interest in hosting more races in the future. Denker, the race’s chairman, confirmed that this event was specifically designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary, but discussions for future races are ongoing.
