In a tragic development, rescue teams in Nepal have recovered the bodies of five climbers, three of whom were foreign nationals, who went missing after an avalanche in November 2025. The climbers were trapped on the slopes of Yalung Ri, a peak standing at 5,630 meters on the Nepal-Tibet border.
According to Biswash Karki, the head of the Garishankar municipality, the bodies were discovered on Thursday by local residents and rescue workers. Karki confirmed that the remains belonged to two Nepalese climbers and one each from Italy, Canada, and Germany.
Rescue Efforts and Challenges
Since the climbers’ disappearance, local authorities mobilized the army, police, and rescue teams to search for them. However, their efforts were hampered as the bodies were buried under thick layers of snow.
Manoj Kumar Lama, a senior police official, stated that a helicopter was dispatched on Friday to assist in the recovery operation. «Our team will evacuate the bodies by helicopter as soon as the weather improves,» Lama added.
Context of Climbing in Nepal
Nepal is home to eight of the world’s ten highest peaks, including Mount Everest, attracting hundreds of climbers each year. According to the Himalata Database, at least 1,093 climbers have lost their lives on these mountains since 1950, with avalanches accounting for nearly one-third of those fatalities.
This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with high-altitude climbing in the region, where unpredictable weather and challenging terrain can pose significant dangers to climbers.
