The Unlikely Friendship Between a Duck and a Golden Retriever Boosts Health and Happiness

In a heartwarming tale from Long Island, New York, a family has discovered the profound impact of an unexpected friendship between their golden retriever, Barley, and a duck named Louie. This unusual bond has not only brought joy to their household but has also played a significant role in improving Barley’s health.

Finding Louie

Justin and Tori Cannarelli, along with their two children, Cameron and Charlie, initially sought Louie through Facebook Marketplace for a garden center owned by Justin. The duck had hatched in an elementary school classroom, and though they intended for him to stay temporarily, Tori decided to bring Louie home instead.

Barley’s Health Challenges

A couple of years ago, Barley began experiencing seizures, prompting the Cannarellis to put her on medication. While the treatment effectively halted the seizures, it came with side effects that diminished Barley’s lively spirit. Tori noted, «She just lost her spunk. She lost her goldenness.» Justin expressed concern, stating, «We thought, oh man, this medication we have to give her for the rest of her life. So this is how she’s going to be.»

Tori observed that Barley started to smile again, wag her tail, and regain her playful personality. «She started having personality again,» Tori remarked, highlighting the positive change in Barley’s demeanor.

He believes that Barley wanted to be friends with Louie and that this desire helped her rediscover her joy. «She wanted to be friends with Louie and hang out with him a lot, so she kind of stretched her joy and fit in with him,» Cameron suggested.
