Krystal Polk, 52, reflects on her family’s deep connection to the land, which has been passed down through four generations. She recalls a time when the property was a peaceful sanctuary, where her family raised chickens and pigs, and traded peaches for pears. However, the arrival of a noisy power plant across the street has turned their once-quiet home into a source of distress.
“We lived a very simplistic life,” Polk stated, but the noise from the plant has made it unbearable. “It’s like you’re in the middle of the airport where the planes are taking off, but they never take off,” she added, highlighting the constant roar that now fills the air.
Community Backlash and Health Concerns
The power plant, which is part of Musk’s ambitious expansion in the region, has drawn significant backlash from local residents. The Safe and Sound Coalition, a community group, has gathered over 1,400 signatures on a petition demanding the plant’s closure due to concerns over noise and air pollution.
Polk and her family have also expressed worries about their health, particularly as they suffer from asthma and are concerned about emissions from the gas turbines. “I’m afraid that we will be the ones that everyone looks back on and says, ‘Hey, remember they tried to tell us that these things were hazardous to our health,’” she said.

In April, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) filed a lawsuit against xAI and its subsidiary, MZX Tech, alleging that the plant emits harmful pollutants. In response, SpaceXAI has sought to dismiss the case, with the Department of Justice intervening, claiming that the lawsuit could impede national security efforts related to AI.
Despite assurances from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality that the facility would comply with air quality standards, a study by EmPower Analytics Group indicated that the installation of additional gas turbines would exacerbate air pollution, disproportionately affecting Black communities in the area.

Polk filed a complaint against Cushman & Wakefield Commercial Advisors, alleging harassment during their attempts to negotiate a sale. The firm has denied any wrongdoing, stating they were simply exploring potential acquisition options on behalf of an unidentified client.
