Deadly Earthquake Strikes Eastern Indonesia, Leaving 38 Confirmed Dead

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least 38 individuals, according to officials from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

The earthquake, which occurred at 5:58 AM local time, had its epicenter located 42 miles north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province. The region experienced several aftershocks following the initial quake.

Casualties and Damage

In addition to the fatalities, the agency reported that two people were seriously injured and 11 sustained minor injuries. Approximately 2,000 residents evacuated their homes voluntarily as a precaution.

Fathur Rahman, head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Agency, stated that rescuers have recovered at least 20 bodies across the three affected regencies of Sikka, West Manggarai, and East Manggarai. Among the deceased, eight bodies were retrieved from a landslide in the village of Reok.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with two villagers still believed to be trapped under debris from landslides triggered by the quake.

Tsunami Warning and Response Efforts

Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning and advised coastal residents to seek higher ground. However, this warning was later lifted after the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported no significant changes in sea levels that would threaten coastal areas.

East Nusa Tenggara Police Chief Rudi Darmoko noted that the earthquake caused extensive damage, leading to the collapse of buildings and power outages that have hindered communication and rescue efforts.

“We are continuing to collect reports of damage and casualties, but there are communication disruptions,” Darmoko said.

Additionally, landslides in Ende regency have obstructed the Trans-Flores highway, a critical route spanning approximately 435 miles across Flores Island.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

Local hospitals have begun evacuating patients as a precautionary measure. Medical staff moved essential equipment outdoors and established temporary treatment areas to accommodate emergency conditions.

The National Disaster Management Agency has deployed a helicopter to assist with logistics and emergency response operations, which is vital given the region’s challenging geography.

Approximately 2,000 villagers from Nagekeo regency have sought refuge in temporary shelters as the situation continues to develop.
