Approximately 9,000 residents have been permitted to return to their homes in the Reno, Nevada area following the containment efforts of the Hawk Fire, which has devastated the region since its outbreak on Saturday. The fire, which is believed to be human-caused, has resulted in the destruction of more than 40 homes and continues to pose a threat to the community.

Current Status of the Hawk Fire

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fire has burned 15,067 acres and is reported to be 27% contained. According to Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam, around 5,000 individuals remain evacuated due to ongoing risks associated with the fire.

Evacuations and Return of Residents

Residents living east of State Route 395 were allowed to return home by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, while those on the west side of the highway, which experienced the most severe damage, are still under evacuation orders. Sheriff Balaam emphasized the rapid spread of the fire, noting that it advanced six miles within the first 24 hours.

Investigation into the Cause

The cause of the Hawk Fire is currently under investigation. Sheriff Balaam indicated that the fire’s origin is suspicious, as it occurred in a remote area with no lightning strikes reported, suggesting it was likely human-related. However, officials have yet to determine if the fire was started intentionally or accidentally.

Firefighting Efforts and Weather Conditions

Fire Chief Richard Edwards of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District expressed gratitude that no fatalities have been reported, calling it remarkable given the fire’s rapid escalation. He urged the public to exercise caution, especially as critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop starting Wednesday and persist through the weekend.

“All of these fires, these large fires that we’ve incurred over the last 2½ weeks, which were human-caused — that means they’re preventable,” Edwards stated, highlighting the importance of community awareness and safety measures.
